Forced positivity can be a component of trauma. When a person is told to stop being negative, look at the bright side, straighten up, quit your complaining, this is dismissal of emotions. Such dismissal can activate the nervous system. When this happens, the amygdala activates, shutting down the prefrontal cortex and continuing the trauma activation cycle. Naming the emotion aids in supporting the prefrontal cortex with logic.

Logic calms the amygdala.
